Artist Statement
Behaviour of my expanding imagination is spooky mandara. I try sketching fictional figures like unknown anime characters like graphiti but the characters eventually transform into actual people whom I met before. It seems that fiction and real are chasing in my paintings. I can not control it because my art is not perfect. But I think the imperfection can make art better. Because, to me, art is free fall of ego. So, imperfection is perfect to me
私の想像が膨らむ様子はどろどろした曼荼羅です。落書きのように知らないアニメキャラを素早く描こうとすると私が以前出会った人の顔になってしまう。私の絵のなかで虚構と現実が追いかけっ子しているようにみえます。私のアートは完全でないため私はそれをコントロール出来ません。しかしこの不完全さがアートをより良くするのだと考えます。 なぜなら、私にとって、アートは自我の自由落下だからです。 私にとって不完全こそ完全なのです。

Tomoaki Shibata (b.1981, Tokyo) is a Japanese artist whose foundation is Japanese Painting a.k.a nihonga and he usually makes mural size paitings while depicting fictional things not so intentionally representing actual things and also he makes comics in which fiction and real are mixed. He lives and works around Tokyo now but he lived and worked in Los Angeles from 2015 to 2022. He graduated from Musahino Art Universit where he majored Japanese Painting, in 2005.And in 2015 he granted Overseas Study Program For Upcoming Artist which is the Japanese government's grant originaly sent him to the US. In 2021, He graduated Los Angeles City College where he majored VAMA (Visual And Media Art). He went there for two years after he went several language schools in Koreatown in Los Aangeles. In 2019 Loren Philip who is a Los Angeles local painter and Shibata took place "Year One" which was their two years big paintings collaboration's exhibition in Castelli Art Space at Midcity, Los Angeles and its curator was Peter Frank.
柴田智明(1981東京生まれ)は日本画を基礎にした日本のアーティストで、いつもは壁画サイズのそれほど意図的でもなく現実を表してしまう虚構の絵をかきますが虚構と現実が混ざった漫画も描きます。東京在住ですが2022年まで７年半ロサンゼルスで活動していました。武蔵野美術大学の日本画学科を2005年に卒業しました。もともと2015年に文化庁の新進芸術家海外研修員として渡米しました。いくつかのロサンゼルスのコリアタウンの語学学校に行ったあと、2021年にビジュアルアンドメディアアート専攻でロサンゼルスシティーカレッジに二年間在学し卒業しました。2019年にピーターフランクをキュレーターに迎えロサンゼルスの現地のアーティスト、ローレンフィリップとの二年間かけた合作絵画の展覧会「YEAR ONE」をロサンゼルスのミッドシティーにあるカステリアートスペースで開催しました。
